How to store your winter wear

Now that winter is finally coming to an end, it’s time to put away all the thick garments and accessories that kept us warm during the chillier season. While you may dread storing those bulky jackets and clunky boots, you can maximize the amount of space in your apartment by creatively storing your winter wear. At Williams and McDaniel Property Management, we want to help residents effectively store away their winter belongings and start the new season off with an organized apartment.

Boots and Shoes

Keep Them Pristine and Clean

To increase the lifespan and maintain the integrity of your winter boots and shoes, make sure you clean them before storing them away. This is the perfect opportunity to deal with the salt, water and mud stains that have accumulated on your footwear during the slushy season. PureWow offers an instructional video on how to remove salt stains from your winter boots. Apply an equal parts water and vinegar mixture to your boots and the salt stains will vanish.

Double-Duty Furniture

Out-of-season footwear can be stored in trunks and ottomans that serve a dual purpose as pieces of furniture. Stackable, transparent shoe boxes are another option. Label the boxes and stack them on your closet floor or on shelves. In a few months, you’ll be able to find exactly what you’re looking for.

 Clothes (Mittens, Hats, Jackets, Scarves)

 Keep Them Protected

Keep your winter items protected by storing them in garment bags. These bags are especially helpful if you have items that require hanging. Similar to your boots, it is important to make sure everything is cleaned before you store it. Storing dirty clothes can result in discolouration and can completely ruin them. It is also a good idea to swap out wire dry cleaner hangers for sturdy ones to avoid misshapen garments.

 Sweet Smelling

Throw scented sachets or cedar blocks in when you store your clothes to ensure that they come out smelling fresh and free of musty odours. These sweet-smelling solutions will also keep pests away.

 Store Low – Under-The-Bed Storage

Utilize the space under your bed with rollable bins and drawers. These options are designed to slide covertly under your bed and make finding and swapping out seasonal items in your closet a breeze.

 Store High

Grab some bins and tuck your scarves, mittens and hats in your closet or on top of your dresser. Be sure to label the bins and keep all pairs together to avoid any orphaned gloves.

To keep winter storage seamlessly organized, make sure to label anything that you can’t easily see into. This will take extra time, but it will be well worth it when it comes time to find that pair of gloves, that scarf or that toque. At Williams and McDaniel Property Management, we want to help our residents and hope these tips will make your winter storage hassle-free.
