Making Your Own Green Cleaning Supplies

At Williams & McDaniel’s property management, we pride ourselves on our superior customer service, the cleanliness of our rental properties and our green initiatives. In order to maintain a clean and spotless living space, many renters choose store-bought cleaning supplies without recognizing their potentially harmful effects. Store-bought cleaning supplies are often filled with toxins, harmful chemicals and harsh cleaning agents that are not beneficial to your health and can cause home air pollution.  As an alternative, renters can turn to green cleaning supplies, which are extremely cost-effective and a great alternative to traditional cleaners. Today on Williams and McDaniel’s blog, we discuss how to make your own green cleaning supplies using simple household ingredients.

Porcelain, tiled spaces and kitchen counters are known to collect stains, dust and the occasional food mishap, so there are a variety of natural cleaners to choose from, including baking soda and water or lemon juice and vinegar. For those trickier and tougher stains, salt is also a great way to penetrate and remove unsightly spots. If you are looking for a natural way to disinfect countertops, try mixing 2 cups of water and 3 tablespoons of liquid soap with 20-30 drops of tea tree oil.

Some kitchen appliances like the oven can be tricky to clean and as a result they are usually left in their less-than-clean state. Simply combining baking soda and water into a paste, coating the inside of the oven and letting it sit overnight will allow grime to be easily wiped away and restore appliances to a crystal clean state. While kitchen appliances are important, it’s your windows that are more likely to be noticed by visitors. Windows are often described as the eyes of a home and it is only right that they be spotless and in sparkling condition. In order to achieve this look, all you need is a spray bottle mixture of white vinegar and water, which needs to be scrubbed on the windows’ surface with newspaper. Unlike paper towels, newspaper will not cause streaking on glass and will minimize unnecessary waste.

Carpets and rugs are areas that commonly get the brunt of spills and stains. However, permanent stains and damage can be avoided by using ingredients like club soda, cornmeal, liquid soap, detergent and cornstarch.  The items you choose to fight and remove your stains will depend on what and when you spilled. In order to get successful cleaning results, it is best to handle and clean stains and spills immediately after they occur.

Williams and McDaniel’s apartments also offer wood flooring. These looks especially nice when they give off a warm, welcoming and clean glow that can be achieved by using a combination of white vinegar and warm water. Finally, green-cleaning supplies can also be used to clean up clogged drains that can occur in both kitchen and bathroom areas by combining baking soda and boiling water. With the help of these simple and inexpensive non-toxic cleaners, Williams and McDaniel apartment renters can tackle a variety of places in their apartment including bathrooms, kitchen area and living room with supplies that are both natural and environmentally conscious.
